Chapter Twenty-Six

Present

ARWEN

The furious pounding of my heart grows louder as the music from the party fades into the distance. Aidan continues to drag me down a trail through the trees with only his phone and the glow of the moon lighting our way. I’ve done some ballsy things in my lifetime, but showing up at this party tonight might top them all. At this point, I’m asking for trouble. Anyone could’ve seen us together. As Aidan proved in South Carolina, social media is dangerous. News about us being seen together at this party could be all over town before the end of the night.

But I haven’t been able to stop thinking about our night together. Maybe if I make him my personal buffet instead of the forbidden fruit, I’ll get my fill and be able to walk away.

We hit the next clearing where several tents are set up, and Aidan finally comes to a stop. He releases my hand and tucks his phone into his back pocket before meeting my stare. Even in the pale light of the moon, his sage eyes feel probing as they peer into mine, and I fight the urge to look away.

“What’s with all these tents?” I ask, trying to cut through some of the tension that’s settled between us. “Did you guys set these up hoping you’d get lucky?”

His lips form a sultry smile, and he runs a hand through his hair. “This is for after the party. We weren’t about to drink and drive, so we needed somewhere to crash.”

“And they say jocks aren’t smart,” I mock. “Where’s your tent?”

His eyes stay on me as he points to the edge of the clearing where his Bronco is sitting with a rooftop tent perched on top of it. The nineteen seventy mint green vehicle fits him perfectly. Almost as well as my sixty-nine cobalt blue Pontiac GTO suits me. Our love for classic cars is one of the few things we actually have in common.

He eyes me with amused curiosity as I sidestep him, and then he follows right behind me while I head over to the Bronco. “Are we seriously not going to talk about this first?” he asks.

My stomach lurches at his question. “About what? This bougie fucking tent?” I counter.

His laughter flows through the night air around me, easing some of the tension in my gut as I turn to face him. “It has a fucking ladder,” I tease, grabbing a hold of it.

“Hey, I don’t have to worry if it rains,” he says.

I smack my lips, stepping on the ladder. “I’m going up.”

My palms are sweaty as I climb, my knees feeling weaker with each rung. Aidan is still planted on the ground when I make it to the top. I lie down on the gray lining that reminds me of a padded cell. Which is probably where I belong given my current behavior. There’s a little window directly above my head, giving me a perfect view of the night sky.
